ORAL HISTORY -SOUND DOCUMENTS COLLECTION

In 1995 adopted National Film Archive programme of sound documentation and oral history and founded Sound documents collection. Approved concept of the future work reassume the almost 50 years tradition of sound records shooting in Prague filmotheque and NFA accepted and highlighted usage of sound (eventually audiovisual) documentation for work of film historians and archivists.

About collection

The basis of the collection were interviews with some witnesses of the early age of the Czech cinematography. Then tied-up with recording of biographical interviews with personalities of the Czech after war cinematography in compliance with a concept of the oral history. These interviews with interesting people from different branches linked with film branch development create its main part.

Beside biographical narrations are continuously realised thematic interviews concerning for instance a history of film for children, animated film during protectorate, and history of dramaturgic background of Film studio Barrandov, amateur film or film clubs.

Another important parts are sound records of events related with activities of institutions such is FIAF or VÚZORT. This part contents also records from forums and press conferences from IFF Karlovy Vary and from meetings of film professionals and events linked with NFA activities.

On which conditions can be the collection used?

Collection is in stage of gradually processing and its availability is abided by archive and Copyright Act. The availability is possible up to now only to public doing research for expert scientific reasons and must be approved by NFA director.

Which is the next procedure to make the availability possible?

It is necessary to contact some of our custodians and arrange the material delivery which you want study. After filling-in a research form the sound material (eventually copy) will be loaned to you can be studied in place.

On which conditions is contingent publication possible? 

In this case it is abided by the Archive and Copyright Act and by concrete wishes and requirements of that respondent, which are implemented in the written agreement, so-called copyright.

One of main tasks of NFA Sound documents collection is ensure storage of interesting and important records, associated in different ways with the history of Czech film making. NFA fulfil all conditions which guarantee the highest possible quality of archiving and protection of valuable contemporary documents. If you are owner of some sound record from any era which subject relates to the Czech cinematography, whether it is an interview, event records or other types of audiorecords, and you are interested in safe storing, we offer to you cost free storing in our deposits. Any enrichment of our collections from your sources is a worthy contribution to enlargement of awareness about the Czech film history together with our cultural history.

The EU project EFG – the European Film Gateway created a web portal that gives you quick and easy on-line access to currently about 400 000 digital objects – photos, posters, text documents, newsreels, feature films and documentaries – from collections of 16 European film archives and cinémathèques. One of them is Národní filmový archiv. By September 2011, the number of objects will increase to 600 000. See www.europeanfilmgateway.eu
